Trinidad transport minister rejects meeting with REDjet officials

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Transport, Senator Devant Maharaj, said he has not agreed to meet with the officials at REDjet at their request until they have secured an air operators certificate (AOC) from the Barbados government.

Redjet has written to the director general of the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA) indicating that “the airline’s shareholders were obliged to suspend operations as continued funding of the current business plan was contingent on the activation of agreement that was concluded between the shareholders of REDjet and the government of Barbados in January this year” and requested dialogue with the TTCAA in the interim.

Chavez returns to Cuba for treatment, will not attend summit

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) — Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez will not participate in the Sixth Summit of the Americas, underway in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro has announced.

The Venezuelan diplomat said Chavez was due to travel instead to Cuba to continue his medical treatment. He added that though Chavez won’t be physically present, he will follow the debates that the heads of state and government will start this afternoon.

Maduro reaffirmed that the Latin American countries participating in the Summit will defend the dignity of their peoples, as part of the new independence process the region is going through.

Former Grenada PM repeats call for immediate general election

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada — Opposition leader Dr Keith Mitchell has repeated his often-made appeal for Grenada’s Prime Minister Tillman Thomas to dissolve parliament and call an immediate general election.

Mitchell’s latest appeal came on Thursday against the backdrop of recent comments from Thomas, who said the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is divided between the “forces of good and evil” and accused unnamed persons in the NDC of trying to “restrict” him from interacting with the rank and file of the party.

There are also reports of tension in the NDC over the selection of candidates for general elections that are due by next year.

Wildlife conservation group launches Caribbean program

WASHINGTON, USA — The Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders (EWCL) has announced the 2012 participants for its new training program in the Caribbean.

Funded in part by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and supported by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), C-EWCL is an opportunity for up-and-coming conservation professionals in the Caribbean to gain invaluable skills and experience working with proven conservation leaders. Graduates will become future conservation leaders with the competence necessary to lead on critical issues facing wildlife in the region.

Call for unity at opening of Summit of the Americas

CARTEGENA, Colombia — The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, called for the unity of the countries of the hemisphere at the inauguration of the Sixth Summit of the Americas, saying “a united Americas is an achievable reality” to achieve common objectives, overcome obstacles on the road to progress and prosperity, and to reach the solutions that the countries demand to the most urgent problems.”

He added that “democracy is advancing in the Americas and the best way to strengthen it is not through external pressure, imposition, or exclusion, but in dialogue, cooperation and tolerance.”
